An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university qualified Allied Health Professional that holds the highest level of training for prescribing exercise to individuals. AEPs possess a university degree in Exercise Physiology and accreditation with Exercise Sports Science Australia. Consequently, AEPs are equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people who have acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries and disabilities. These interventions are evidence-based through scientific research and testing and include health and physical activity education, advice and support, and lifestyle modification with a strong focus on achieving behavioural change.

Current evidence supports physical activity and exercise as an integral treatment for both primary and secondary prevention and the treatment of chronic disease. AEPs are trained in the pathology and treatment of illness and injury in the cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, neurological, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems of the human body.
